There Will Be Swamp – Steve Mnuchin Confirms Treasury Secretary Nod

While I’m not a Dodd-Frank fan, it’s not because it was too harsh, but because it didn’t really do much of anything. It was the typical neoliberal bait and switch, designed to look tough for public consumption, while merely making tweaks around the edges of a financial system that requires systemic, paradigm level change.
Trump’s support of repealing Dodd-Frank tells you all you need to know. A Trump Presidency will see Wall Street felons who should be in prison, running as wild and free as ever.
He will be the same thing to distressed working class whites that Obama was to the black community. A fake messiah and a shyster.
– From May’s post: Donald Trump’s True Colors Emerge as He Snuggles up to Wall Street
The fact that Steve Mnuchin was a Goldman Sachs partner is the least of my concerns when it comes to the man. Indeed, if someone wanted to create a playing card deck of sleazy Wall Street financial crisis opportunists, it’d be hard not to include Steve Mnuchin.
What exactly am I talking about? Specifically, I’m referring to the collapse of IndyMac (renamed One West), and the generous helping of government welfare Mnuchin and his partners received upon purchasing the failed banking institution. This is a financial crisis saga that is unknown to most, despite having received some extensive coverage over the past year. One of the best articles on the topic was written by David Dayen in his piece, Donald Trump’s Finance Chair Is the Anti-Populist From Hell. Here are a few excerpts:

To Really Make America Great, Trump Could ‘Reassert 4th Amendment And Roll Back Surveillance State’

This article was written by Kelli Sladick and originally published at the Tenth Amendment Center.
Editor’s Comment: The truth of the matter is that presidents come and go, and while some are better than others, it is better that way. What remains, and shall not be infringed, is our rights as a people. Unfortunately, 9/11 and the War on Terror were used to justify a massive domestic surveillance program that has utterly trampled upon the rights and due process of American citizens. George W. Bush delivered the first major blow, but Barack Obama continued and expanded those powers – albeit quietly, by signing documents including the NDAA – that have re-classified free people as potential enemy combatants and domestic terrorists.
With all of Donald Trump’s talk and vague promised about making the country return to greatness (definitely, a hell of a campaign slogan), what would be the most lasting and meaningful would be rolling back the tyranny of the executive branch. The Oval Office has taken away from the American people something that was never theirs to take – and American cannot and will not ‘be great again’ if that oppressive era is not repealed, and stopped in its tracks. However, early signs point to Trump’s support for an expanded war on terror against ISIS, surveillance against Muslims and other ‘at risk’ groups and a general empowerment for the NSA and co.
It remains to be seen what Trump will do, and what his legacy will be – but if he wants history to see his greatness shine through, this would be the path to take. Here’s rooting for the Constitutional era of America, and not the corporate fascist one…
Following The Fourth Amendment Would Help Make America Great Again
by Kelli Sladick
During the last eight years, the Obama administration failed to live up to its promise reverse the Bush era’s mass surveillance of American citizens. In fact, it was expanded and justified. If you were silent, the sweeping power controlled by the president may not be on your radar for the right reasons. While there is a deep fear resonating, at least half looked the other way when ‘their guy’ held the powers of the presidency.
So let’s put aside the distractions roaring through the media, and let’s walk down memory lane.
The Fourth Amendment was assaulted relentlessly under Bush and it continued through both of Obama’s presidential terms. The hits came from two sides, one by mass surveillance and the other by undermining data security. Now, as my focus may just be on progressives for the moment, the truth remains that neither party, Republican nor Democratic has limited its power, especially in regards to surveillance. Know full well, I have no illusion that Trump will set a new trend of limitations.

These Failing Companies Will Finally Disappear in 2017

Companies fail for all sorts of reasons – changing political climate, controversy, lack of consumer interest, technology, the list goes on …
But the real shockers are when the companies you grew up with call it quits. Or when the high-profile startups that the media said would never fail, fail.
These are the companies that affect consumers most when they go under, and can cost investors a lot of money if they aren’t ahead of the crowd.
So we’ve compiled a list of five failing companies that most likely won’t be around by the end of 2017.
The list includes one company embroiled in scandal and a multinational business that has been a household name in America for over 130 years…
Failing Company No. 5: Theranos
The health technology company famously dubbed for having the next Steve Jobs as CEO is now in serious trouble.
The downfall started with a scathing article by The Wall Street Journal in October 2015. The article revealed the inconsistencies in the micro-sized blood sampling machinery Theranos used – and the $9 billion startup began to crumble.
In July, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services stated that the company had ‘put patients in immediate jeopardy’ by claiming that the device was more effective than it actually was found to be. Recommendations and analyses based on the results of Theranos’ lab tests became jeopardized.

A Second Look At The OPEC Deal: Here’s What Can Go Wrong

Defying numerous skeptics, today’s historic OPEC decision to cut production, a first since 2009, marks a clear turning point in cartel, and especially Saudi Arabian, politics: individual country quotas have been allocated to all members, a third-party production verification process has been established, and the world’s largest crude oil producer Russia has committed to freeze production. At least, that’s what the deal looks like on paper.
For those who missed today’s fireworks, which saw oil soar as much as 10%, here are the key details.
The OPEC deal features explicit country level production adjustments that target a reduction in OPEC crude production to 32.7 mb/d, down 1.2 mb/d from October (as measured from secondary sources). Libya, Nigeria and Indonesia (an oil importer) are exempt from any adjustment and apart from Iran, the remaining country production decline is 4.6% vs. October (September for Angola). Iran’s participation, while essential to this deal, still leaves questions unanswered with the agreement allowing for a 90 kb/d increase in production when compared to October OPEC secondary sources, but requiring a 180 kb/d cut from October production when measured through direct communication. While no details were provided, non-OPEC countries are expected to join this deal with a target of reducing supply by 0.6 mb/d and Russia expected to commit to a 0.3 mb/d production cut. While Russia embraced the deal, it made it clear it would be very slow in cutting production due to “technical issues”, and refused to explain from what level it would make the 0.3mb/d cut – Russia previously suggested it may cut from a projected budget output level for 2017, suggesting Russia won’t actually cut production at all.

Wisconsin Judge Denies Stein’s Request For “Hand Recount”

While this should come as a shock to precisely no one other than some disaffected Hillary supporters who were hoping for a miracle, Jill Stein’s request for a full “hand recount” in the state of Wisconsin has officially been denied by Dane County Circuit Judge Valerie Bailey-Rihn. According to the StarTribune, the request was denied after the judge found that Stein failed to show any mistakes or irregularities that would bring a machine recount into question.
A Wisconsin judge has refused to order local officials to conduct the state’s presidential recount by hand.
Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein requested the recount last week. She alleged – without evidence – that the state’s voting equipment may have been hacked.
The state Elections Commission has ordered the recount to begin Thursday but rejected Stein’s request that county clerks conduct the recount entirely by hand. Stein filed a lawsuit seeking an order for a statewide hand recount.

Angry Mobs Lock Up Indian Bankers As Cash Chaos Soars: “We Are Fearing The Worst”

India’s demonetization campaign is not going as expected.
Overnight, banks played down expectations of a dramatic improvement in currency availability, raising the prospect of queues lengthening as salaries get paid and people look to withdraw money from their accounts the Economic Times reported.
While much of India has become habituated to the sight of people lining up at banks and cash dispensers since the November 8 demonetisation announcement, bank officials said the message from the Reserve Bank of India is that supplies may not get any easier in the near future and that they should push digital transactions. ‘We had sought a hearing with RBI as we were not allocated enough cash, but we were told that rationing of cash may continue for some time,’ said a banker who was present at one of several meetings with central bank officials.
‘Reserve Bank has asked us to push the use of digital channels to all our customers and ensure that we bring down use of cash in the economy,’ said a banker. This confirms a previous report according to which the demonstization campaign has been a not so subtle attempt to impose digital currency on the entire population.

Populist-Nationalist Tide Rolls On

Now that the British have voted to secede from the European Union and America has chosen a president who has never before held public office, the French appear to be following suit.
In Sunday’s runoff to choose a candidate to face Marine Le Pen of the National Front in next spring’s presidential election, the center-right Republicans chose Francois Fillon in a landslide.
While Fillon sees Margaret Thatcher as a role model in fiscal policy, he is a socially conservative Catholic who supports family values, wants to confront Islamist extremism, control immigration, restore France’s historic identity and end sanctions on Russia.
‘Russia poses no threat to the West,’ says Fillon. But if not, the question arises, why NATO? Why are U. S. troops in Europe?
As Le Pen is favored to win the first round of the presidential election and Fillon the second in May, closer Paris-Putin ties seem certain. Europeans themselves are pulling Russia back into Europe, and separating from the Americans.
Next Sunday, Italy holds a referendum on constitutional reforms backed by Prime Minister Matteo Renzi. If the referendum, trailing in the polls, fails, says Renzi, he will resign.

University Stuns World: Pledges To Support Free Speech, “Censorship Is Not The Answer”

'It is not our responsibility to prevent other people from speaking, it is our responsibility to come up with a better argument' #CardiffAGM
— Gair Rhydd (@gairrhydd) November 24, 2016

Did the politically-correct insanity just reach its tipping point? Just weeks after a notably politically-incorrect Donald Trump was swept to victory in the US election,’s Kieran Corcoran reports a university has pledged to end its culture of censorship and no-platforming, and has instead pledged to defend free speech.
Cardiff University in Wales has said it will no longer ban events by controversial speakers, declaring ‘censorship is not the answer.’
The decision was made by the Cardiff University Students’ Union at their annual conference last week, where they passed a motion called ‘Challenge, Don’t Censor.’

Most of the time, the president says things we more or less agree with. When he says things along the lines of attacks on civilians must be stopped, of course, we all approve. How can we not?
The only problem is that usually, he is only applying those standards to uncooperative governments and never to himself or his allies.
The war on alternative media is a prime example of this. Obama’s spiel at a recent press conference in Germany is hard to argue with on its face, as he stated that fake news undermines the American political process:
‘If we are not serious about facts and what’s true and what’s not, if we can’t discriminate between serious arguments and propaganda, then we have problems.’
I agree. I think everyone agrees. Fake news must be stopped.
During the late nineties, the NATO war machine decided to spread its democratic principles to Yugoslavia. The country’s president at the time, Slobodan Milosevic, was widely branded as a war criminal by the mainstream media. There was some consensus that intervention was necessary to bring an end to his actions.
Years later, that perspective persisted. A 2011 Telegraph article explainsthat under Milosevic’s rule, ‘ethnic cleansing became a reality as whole populations were forced from their homes and hundreds of thousands were killed.’
