Tesla Sued Over Model X “Spontaneous Acceleration”

Is Tesla having the worst year ever? Over the course of 2016, we’ve written frequently about Tesla’s many setbacks including several auto-pilot related crashes, hackers taking control of moving vehicles, egregious levels of cash burn and a very controversial merger with SolarCity.
Now, as 2016 draws to a close, Tesla once again finds itself in the spotlight as a Model X owner has filed a lawsuit alleging that his electric SUV suddenly accelerated while being parked, causing it to crash through the garage of his home and into his living room, injuring the driver and a passenger.
In the lawsuit filed Friday in California, Ji Chang Son said that one night in September, he was slowly pulling into his driveway as his garage door opened when the car suddenly sped forward. Unfortunately for Tesla, the lawsuit seeks class action status noting at least seven other complaints from owners of similar incidents. Per CBC News: “The vehicle spontaneously began to accelerate at full power, jerking forward and crashing through the interior wall of the garage, destroying several wooden support beams in the wall and a steel sewer pipe, among other things, and coming to rest in plaintiffs’ living room,” the lawsuit said. The lawsuit, filed in U. S. District Court in the Central District of California, seeks class-action status. It cites seven other complaints registered in a database compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) dealing with sudden acceleration.

Pentagon Admits US Airstrike On Hospital “May Have Killed Civilians”

Submitted by Jason Ditz via TheAntiMedia.org,
Adding to concerns about the civilian toll of the US air war against ISIS targets, the Pentagon yesterday admitted that they carried out an airstrike against the parking lot of a Mosul hospital, conceding that they ‘may have killed civilians’ in the attack.
The Pentagon’s Combined Joint Strike Force said in a statement that they were after a van they suspected of carrying ISIS fighters, and they blew it up in the parking lot of what ‘was later determined to be a hospital.’ The US has previously insisted all hospital sites in Mosul were well known and that they were taking extreme care not to hit civilians.

Narrative Smashed By Stats – “Most Americans” Did Not Vote For Hillary Clinton

Submitted by Salil Mehta via Statistical Ideas blog,
Happy New Year! As we wrap up another successful year of the statistics blog (now with >50k followers), we would be remiss not to recognize some nice friends who are still feeling disappointed over the outcome of the recent U. S. election. It is worth exploring a little more about the election results, based on the most updated voting records. Particularly as the Democrats have pivoted the tte- -tte from recount and FBI director Comey, to popular vote and Russian president Putin.
What does it mean to now imply that “most Americans” voted for Democratic ideals, given the results (looked at through the prism of a popular vote tabulation) showed Hillary Clinton won by only a couple percent? It turns out that this sort of conclusion is false, and instead it leads to one party presuming to hold a mighty moral high-ground from their voting share?
From a peak in 2008, now through 2016, those not caring to vote (in white below) continuously rose to 45% (from 43%). This is a higher voter apathy than in virtually all other advanced countries. And frankly, it is the largest American segment of 114m (up from 99m). Last-minute undecideds (including me) rose.

Fake News: Relentless, Predatory FOX

Well now, it appears there is actually a story in here regarding malware tied to Russia:
BURLINGTON, Vt. – Malware code linked to Russian hackers and found on a Vermont electric utility’s computer is further evidence of “predatory” steps taken by that country against the U. S., a Vermont Democratic congressman said Saturday.
….
“This attack shows how rampant Russian hacking is. It’s systemic, relentless, predatory,” Rep. Peter Welch said in a statement. “They will hack everywhere, even Vermont, in pursuit of opportunities to disrupt our country.”
Welch said the breach also underscores that sanctions President Barack Obama took against Russia this week were warranted. Russia, which has denied hacking U. S. systems, has been accused of interference in the U. S. presidential election by hacking American political sites and email accounts.
In other news the person who used that laptop was known to prefer pornographic video of sex with goats (sarc).
First off, said laptop was apparently owned by said utility but, the utility claims at least, it was not in any way connected to any part of their network, especially the parts that actually control its operations. This leads one to wonder exactly what purpose said laptop had — perhaps it was part of a meter-reading system in a company vehicle, for example.

In 2017 Address, Merkel Decries “Distorted Picture” Of Refugee Policy “Painted By Populists”

In an awkwardly similar rhetoric to the failed slogan of Hillary Clinton, German Chancellor Angela Merkel told her nation that “together, we are stronger. Our state is stronger,” giving no ground on her increasingly questioned open-border refugee policy as she slammed the “distorted picture” being painted by populists.
Chancellor Angela Merkel urged Germans to stay calm in the face of Islamist terrorism and, as Bloomberg reports, criticized nationalists for offering false hopes of security, signaling she’ll count on voters to opt for stability when she runs for a fourth term in 2017.
In her New Year’s Eve speech to the nation, Merkel predicted a contentious political climate in a year that’ll include Donald Trump’s inauguration as U. S. president on Jan. 20 and elections in France and the Netherlands. ‘As we pursue our lives and our work, we tell the terrorists: They are murderers full of hatred, but it’s not they who determine how we live and want to live,’ Merkel said, according to an advance copy of the nationally televised speech on Saturday. ‘We are free, humane, open. Together, we are stronger. Our state is stronger.’

Warning to Trump: don’t approve GMO, pesticide, FDA horror show

In a previous article on Donald Trump, I wrote: ‘I think Trump favors jobs, all jobs, and will go to extremes to create them… He’ll find ways to allow the FDA to license new drugs more quickly, thus maiming and killing more Americans. He’ll cast a blind eye toward big corporate toxic GMOs/pesticides.’
I want to strengthen that warning.
First of all, the FDA isn’t being too careful in their drug approval process, as Trump team members suggest. It’s the opposite. The FDA is in the pocket of pharmaceutical companies. The president-elect should take notice of the famous July 26, 2000, review in the Journal of the American Medical Association, by Dr. Barbara Starfield, a revered public-health expert at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health.
Starfield concluded that FDA-approved medical drugs kill 106,000 Americans a year. That would be 1.06 MILLION deaths per decade. Speeding up their drug-approval work now, the FDA would add many MORE dead Americans to their ‘credit.’
On the issue of GMO/pesticide safety, I could cite many references which eradicate the official claim that these substances are safe. But let’s look at the primary facts surrounding the original approval of GMO crops (and their attendant pesticides) in the US.

Obama’s Executive Order Land Grab ‘Just Designated the Bundy Ranch A National Monument’

Editor’s Comment: Will this latest action, taken by Obama quietly as if in stealth, once again provoke a revolutionary response? It appears that the very land that activists swore the federal government was just trying to take in order to occupy lucrative and mineral rich deposits is indeed highly coveted by President Obama’s faction, at least enough that he wanted it off limits to the patriot upstarts that created not one but two standoffs on the exiting-president’s watch.
The abuse of government power over private property, especially by one individual, is part and parcel of the historical reasons for revolutions, bills of rights and new forms of government.
As Obama prepares to finish his last three weeks in office as a lame duck, it is clear that he is intent on damaging as much of the country as he possibly can, and on clamping down on those who still thirst for independence and freedom. His legacy will be more tyrannical than his cool demeanor and broad smile typically suggest.
Obama Seizes Area Near Bundy Ranch In Massive Last Minute Land Grab
by Alex Thomas
With a stroke of the pen President Obama has unilaterally declared vast swaths of land in Utah and Nevada as two new national monuments, thus putting them under control of the federal government.
Startlingly, the area in Nevada includes the site of the infamous Bundy Ranch standoff as well as land very close to the Bundy Ranch itself. With this move Obama has possibly triggered another armed standoff while also heading off any moves set to be made by incoming president Donald Trump.
A ‘fact sheet’ put out by the White House reads:

Who’s Most Oppressed? Tensions High at Students of Color Conference

Is it wrong or juvenile of me to take secret delight in stuff like this?
This year’s University of California Students of Color Conference degenerated into infighting over the conference theme of fighting ‘anti-blackness.’
Why, members of other groups demanded to know, should we focus on only one group’s oppression?
Because everyone knows blacks are the most oppressed group in America, came the reply.
Well, not everyone in the room accepted that.
The result was fighting, formal complaints, and canceled sessions.
‘Students of other minority groups felt less inclined to protest for the causes of ‘Fighting anti-blackness’ and ‘Black Lives Matter,” said UCLA student Jacqueline Alvarez. ‘They did not think that these issues applied to them and therefore had no reason to protest for them.’

Ep. 815 Are We Like Rome?

Does the American system bear any resemblances to Rome during its imperial period? Paul Krugman, who has cheered virtually every step toward empire (we’re not talking foreign policy here; we mean empire as in a system dominated by a single man or a single centralized government), has the gall to be concerned all of a sudden. This is episode 66 of my sister podcast, Contra Krugman.
