Chapter 22: Culture and Capital

Christian Economics: Teacher’s Edition
And if you faithfully obey the voice of the Lord your God, being careful to do all his commandments that I command you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth. And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, if you obey the voice of the Lord your God. Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the field. Blessed shall be the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground and the fruit of your cattle, the increase of your herds and the young of your flock. Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl. Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out (Deuteronomy 28:1 – 6). The Lord will establish you as a people holy to himself, as he has sworn to you, if you keep the commandments of the Lord your God and walk in his ways. And all the peoples of the earth shall see that you are called by the name of the Lord, and they shall be afraid of you. And the Lord will make you abound in prosperity, in the fruit of your womb and in the fruit of your livestock and in the fruit of your ground, within the land that the Lord swore to your fathers to give you (Deuteronomy 28:9 – 11).
AnalysisThis passage and its parallel in Leviticus 26 present the case for obeying biblical law. The bulk of each chapter lists negative sanctions for disobeying. The chapters deal with sanctions. Sanctions reinforce God’s law.
The nation of Israel was set apart by its legal order. ‘The Lord will establish you as a people holy to himself, as he has sworn to you, if you keep the commandments of the Lord your God and walk in his ways’ (v. 9). Biblical holiness means being set apart ethically. It has to do with sanctification. Israel’s holiness was comprehensive. It involved every aspect of Israelite culture. Biblical holiness is corporate, not just individual. Deuteronomy 28 had to do with Israel as a nation. It had to do with Israel as the manifestation of the kingdom of God. That is, it had to do with the civilization of God. This is the meaning of a kingdom. It is a separate culture. This separation is above all ethical: issues of moral right and wrong. This is why any discussion of either economic theory or practice apart from a discussion of ethics is a monumental conceptual error. There is no such thing as a value-free social order. This includes economics. There is therefore no such thing as value-free social analysis. This includes economics. The economist should be familiar with biblical causation. It is ethical. But modern economists pride themselves on an illusion: value-free economic theory.

Amid Myriad Abuses, Federal Government Subjecting Cliven Bundy, Other Defendants to Protracted Detention in Land Rights Trial

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Federal prosecutors are so determined to demonize and permanently cast into the dungeon Cliven Bundy and 16 of the other men who supported him during an April 12, 2014 encounter with federal land agents near his southern Nevada ranch, that re-trying four of the men from the first of three planned trials is only one thing on growing list of federal maneuvers and abuses that make a mockery of a fair, impartial and speedy trial.
Just for starters, presiding Judge Gloria Navarro of the Federal District Court in Las Vegas, as of this writing, is considering continuing the practice of having the defendants shackled in the courtroom.
In the first trial, five of the six defendants were shackled at the ankle, evidently away from the jury’s view, according to what author and legal expert Roger Roots observed after attending this entire trial so far. Only pro se defendant Todd Engel, representing himself, was allowed to walk freely in court, though the public in attendance could see that the others were shackled, Roots added.
However, Roots noted that a federal Ninth Circuit ruling just came down, saying that defendants should never be shackled in the courtroom unless there’s a highly compelling reason to do so. And there’s no reason to believe any of the Bundy trial’s defendants are violent, let alone violent enough to justify shackles.

Community Leaders, Clergy & Elite Businessmen Busted in Massive Child Sex Ring – Hundreds Arrested

As bogus news pushing the divisive two-party paradigm about which puppet politician said something stupid this week fills the airwaves, very real news is taking place and conveniently getting glossed over. This very real news involves very real victims – who happen to be innocent children.
This week, a massive operation came to a head that was carried out across Southern California which swept up 238 child predators and traffickers – including clergymen attempting to buy a 6-year-old boy.
Conducted by the Los Angeles Regional Internet Crimes against Children task force, ‘Operation Broken Heart III’ targeted offenders wanted for the sexual exploitation of children, child prostitution, sex tourism and possessing and distributing child pornography, said Deputy Chief Matt Blake of the Los Angeles Police Department, as reported by the LA Times.
The mass arrests were not made up of recluse pedophiles living in their mother’s basements either. In fact, much of the arrests involved high-profile figures throughout the community.
John Reynolds, acting special agent in charge for U. S. Department of Homeland Security Investigations said that among those arrested were entertainers, community leaders, white-collar professionals and clergy members.

Did You Feel It, Something Has Changed – Episode 1315b

CNN puts out fake news then deletes it because they had nothing backing the story. Nicaragua, Cuba and other nations are backing Venezuela. Iraq troops free more civilians in Mosul. US is now being blamed for torturing civilians in Yemen. Qatar sends a message and moves closer to Russia. US deep state is now in the process of breaking Syria apart, the Russian’s realize this is the plan. The Pentagon says it would work with Assad and Iran to fight terrorism in Syria. The deep state has one more trick up their sleeve, the big event. There are reports that Obama had cyber bombs inserted into Russian infrastructure.

Conclusion to Part 1

Christian Economics: Teacher’s Edition
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen (Hebrews 11:1).
A. Rival FaithsFaith is basic to the lives of all people. Most of what believe we take on faith. We have not scientifically examined everything we believe. Most of what we fervently believe is not subject to the rigorous but narrowly focused techniques of scientific testing. We believe it anyway.
Leonard E. Read fervently believed in the productivity of human creativity. So do I, but it is not the foundation of my worldview. It was for Read. He called the free market a miracle, meaning a miracle of creativity. I do not call it a miracle. I call God’s creation of the cosmos in six days a miracle. In contrast to Read, I call the free market economy a predictable institutional result of society’s acceptance and enforcement of these principles, all of which are mandated in the Bible: the doctrine of linear time, the doctrine of ethical progress (progressive sanctification), private property, the rule of law, civil laws against theft, taxes below ten percent of income, men’s strict legal responsibility for their actions, the rejection of envy, wealth as a confirmation of the covenant, and men’s commitment to leaving an inheritance to their grandchildren.
Why did Read refer to a pencil as both a miracle and a mystery? First, it is the outcome of innumerable decisions. Second, there is no central planning agency coordinating these decisions. There could not be such an agency. No one knows how to make a pencil. Yet a pencil is common. It is also quite simple. Think of complex products as far greater miracles and far greater mysteries. How could this be? Read said it is the product of an Invisible Hand. But Read did not believe in a supernatural being that is shaped like a hand, yet invisible. The phrase is a metaphor, one coined by Adam Smith in 1759 and used again in 1776. People do not trust their futures to a metaphor. They want to believe in a world with causation based on ethics, where good things happen to law-abiding, ethically righteous people. This is what they teach their children. They do not teach their children to trust in an Invisible Hand (capitalized).
What is the source of the market’s remarkable ability to produce wealth? God or man? If man, does this mean as individuals or the state? How is the system of economic cause and effect sustained?
B. Rival ExplanationsHere is Read’s position:

North Korean Nuclear Threat ‘Top Priority’ For Donald Trump

The imminent nuclear threat from North Korea was addressed by CIA director Mike Pompeo during an interview with MSNBC’s Hugh Hewitt which aired Saturday. Pompeo said that the topic was ‘at the top’ of President Donald Trump’s mind.
Trump is concerned about North Korea’s nuclear capabilities daily. The rogue nation has made many threats, and through tightening sanctions, have continued to test ballistic missiles and work toward obtaining a nuclear weapon. But Donald Trump is taking the threat of a nuclear-capable North Korea very seriously.
Pompeo said he and Trump talk for almost an hour every day, and that ‘I hardly ever escape a day at the White House without the President asking me about North Korea and how it is that the United States is responding to that threat.’ Pompeo added, ‘For 20 years, America has whistled past the graveyard, hoping on hope, that North Korea would turn colors and become part of the Western civilization. There’s no evidence that that’s going to take place, absent a very real, very concrete set of policies that put pressure on the North Koreans to denuclearize. I think that’s what you see Secretary Tillerson trying to do around the world.’ Pompeo was referring to the State Department’s continued efforts to curb North Korea’s nuclear program.

Left wing, right wing, and free markets

One of the saddest things about Britain’s recent general election was the level of ignorance displayed by all parties on the broad subject of political economics. I use the term to include both political philosophy and pure economic theory. Labour, the Liberal Democrats and the Scottish Nationalists seem to think free markets are right-wing. The Conservatives appear to have lost all compass, most government ministers believing free markets without government regulation are chaotic, with unscrupulous traders free to rip off consumers. But then all politicians are elected to intervene, so by default they are likely to think that government can improve on free markets.
It is an issue that bedevils politics in all the developed nations, but the roots go back a hundred years. Political extremes in the last century were both socialist. On the left there was communism, a political system where the state takes possession of the means of production for the common good. It was an attractive idea for those who thought of themselves as underdogs in society, envious of their richer neighbours, and who feared the effects of economic change on their own future. They were encouraged to think that the profits capitalists made could be theirs, owned by the state in trust for themselves. The state would organise production and guarantee employment.

6 Injured After Car Hits Pedestrians Celebrating End Of Ramadan In Newcastle

A car has plowed into a gathering of people celebrating Eid prayers to mark the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan near a Newcastle mosque, according to local media reports cited by Russia Today. Six people have been injured and a female driver has been arrested, police said. The crash occurred outside the Westgate Sports Centre, according to a Northumbria Police statement.
Unlike a similar incident last week where a van driven by a 48-year-old man slammed into a crowd celebrating the last days of Ramadan outside a mosque in Finsbury Park, police say last night’s incident is not being treated as an act of terrorism.

New Poll Shows Majority Of Americans Think Russia Probes Are “A Distraction”

Last month, we reported on a poll showing most Americans don’t want to see President Donald Trump impeached. Today, a new poll released exclusively to the Hill shows that most Americans feel the investigations into alleged collusion between Russian officials and the Trump campaign are a distraction.
The poll found that 64% of Americans believe the investigations are hurting the country, and a whopping 73% believe that the focus on Russia is distracting Congress from important issues like health care and tax reform.
Here’s the Hill:
A majority of voters believe the Russia investigations are damaging to the country and are eager to see Congress shift its focus to healthcare, terrorism, national security, the economy and jobs.
Those are the findings of the latest Harvard-Harris Poll survey, provided exclusively to The Hill, which paints a complicated picture of voters’ opinions about the numerous probes that have engulfed the White House.
Sixty-four percent of voters said the investigations into President Trump and Russia are hurting the country. Fifty-six percent of voters said it’s time for Congress and the media to move on to other issues, compared to 44 percent who said the focus should stay on Russia.

Preparing For War? US House Wants To Create First New Military Branch Since 1947

Via TheAntiMedia.org,
There’s currently a push in the halls of Washington D. C., to establish a new branch of the military by 2019, one whose focus would be operations among the stars. Proposed legislation by House representatives would create a ‘Space Corps’ that would serve ‘as a separate military service within the Department of the Air Force.’
It would be the first branch added to the military since 1947 when the Air Force was officially established.
On Tuesday, the top two lawmakers of the Strategic Forces Subcommittee, Representatives Mike Rogers and Jim Cooper, added the legislation to the 2018 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). The subcommittee oversees military space operations and works within the umbrella of the House Armed Services Committee.
‘There is bipartisan acknowledgement that the strategic advantages we derive from our national security space systems are eroding,’ Rogers and Cooper said in a joint statement. ‘We are convinced that the Department of Defense is unable to take the measures necessary to address these challenges effectively and decisively, or even recognize the nature and scale of its problems.’

How The FBI Become Irrelevant

It just happened folks.
The FBI has apparently declared that the Scalise shooting (at the baseball park) was spontaneous and not premeditated.
This, despite the fact that they found multiple pictures of the ball field in his possession.
They have also declared that he had no particular target in mind.
This, despite the fact that he had a list of Congresspeople on him at the time he committed the offense.
They have further declared that they have no particular motive either.
This, despite the reported fact that he asked one of the people there whether it was Republicans or Democrats practicing, and only after hearing it was Republicans did he go retrieve his guns and start shooting.
Oh, and this “random”, “no known motive” nutbag (at least the last word is accurate) traveled the better part of 1,000 miles in a van from Illinois to Washington DC, rented a storage locker in which he deposited a nice big cache of rounds for his weapons, and then did all of the above.

Angry Dems Turn On Obama, Pelosi, Schumer: “Talk Less About Russia”

It’s been a rough week for the legacy of the Obama administration. Yesterday, the Senate Judiciary Committee launched a Democrat-endorsed probe into former Attorney General Loretta Lynch’s conduct during the campaign – when it’s widely believed she colluded with the Clinton’s to ‘soften’ the FBI’s probe into Hillary’s mishandling of classified information. Earlier, sure-thing Democratic neophyte Jon Ossoff lost a special election in Georgia that he was supposedly guaranteed to win, leading America’s least – preferred party of overly brazen corporatists to an embarrassing 5-0 defeat, and stoking calls for Nancy Pelosi – the Dem’s longtime leader in Congress – to step aside.
And as if all that wasn’t enough, revelations that Russian hackers targeted voting systems in 21 states – and the Obama administration did nothing about it – have inspired the president’s fellow Democrats to turn on their once-revered leader.

The New Cold War: A Chilling Prospect for the World

21st Century Wire says…
‘There is one curious thing…the Presidents of your country [US] change…but the policy…doesnt change, on matters of principle.’ ~ President Putin
NATO’s justification lies in its ability to find or create an enemy, Putin told legendary film maker, Oliver Stone. No other ‘enemy’ has served NATO and the military industrial complex as well as Russia and the ‘Cold War’. The re-emergence of the cold war construct has reached almost unprecedented levels with western media & governments bearing down on historic prejudices with renewed vigour. The new ‘cold war’ is a chilling prospect for the world if it is allowed to mushroom into something more deadly.

CIA Director Mike Pompeo: Trump’s “An Avid Consumer” Of Intel, Will “Punish Leakers”

In his first interview since becoming the head of the CIA, Mike Pompeo pushed back against accusations that President Donald Trump doesn’t read his daily intelligence briefings, claiming that the president is ‘very interested’ in what’s happening at the intelligence communities and that his daily in-person briefings with the president typically run longer than their allotted time.
Pompeo tells MSNBC that Trump is a demanding boss who asks ‘great questions’ and is trying to enable the CIA to take a more active ‘operational’ role in countering threats posed by the US’s enemies.
